PROPOSAL

House Recoding, developed by Reparametrize Ateliers, represents a radical departure from conventional post-conflict reconstruction methodologies. This innovative project, initially showcased at the Shenzhen Biennale 2019/2020, curated by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati tackles the complex challenge of rebuilding war-torn cities in Syria, not through wholesale demolition and reconstruction, but by intelligently integrating prefabricated, adaptable housing units within the existing urban fabric. This approach, dubbed "House Re-Coding," prioritizes speed, affordability, sustainability, and community engagement, offering a human-centered solution to the urgent need for housing in conflict zones.

House Recoding’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the individual housing units to encompass the entire re-coded urban environment. The project incorporates a multitude of green features designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and minimize the development's environmental impact. Green terraces atop the housing units provide valuable green space within the dense urban fabric, mitigating the urban heat island effect and promoting biodiversity. These terraces also offer opportunities for urban farming, contributing to food security and fostering a sense of community through shared agricultural practices. The strategically designed outdoor areas, reminiscent of traditional courtyards, create sheltered microclimates, fostering social interaction and providing spaces for relaxation and recreation. Dedicated play areas within these courtyards cater to the needs of children, promoting physical activity and social development within a safe and stimulating environment. The integration of permeable paving and rainwater harvesting systems further enhances the project's sustainability profile by reducing stormwater runoff and providing a source of non-potable water for irrigation. These combined sustainable features transform House Recoding from a mere housing project into a vibrant, ecologically conscious community that promotes both human and environmental well-being.

The B-Core unit offers a unique combination of flexibility and rapid deployability, crucial for addressing the urgent housing needs in post-conflict scenarios. Its modular design, based on the innovative B-Core panel system, facilitates both efficient packing and transportation for rapid deployment to affected areas and the creation of adaptable living environments tailored to individual needs. Movable interior partitions empower residents to modify the spatial configuration of their units with ease, responding to evolving family structures, lifestyles, and personal preferences. Integrated, expandable furniture further enhances this adaptability, maximizing spatial efficiency and providing versatile solutions for various domestic functions. Furthermore, the simplified assembly process empowers local communities to actively participate in the reconstruction effort, fostering a sense of ownership and agency while accelerating the reconstruction timeline. This participatory approach not only provides essential shelter but also contributes to the development of valuable construction skills within the community, laying the foundation for long-term recovery and self-reliance.

The sustainability of House Recording Units are intrinsically linked to the innovative design of its B-Core housing units. Fabricated from B-Core stainless steel panels, these units exhibit a high degree of thermal efficiency due to their double-layered wall construction. This inherent insulation minimizes energy demands for heating and cooling, resulting in a reduced operational carbon footprint. Moreover, the integration of solar panels and electric turbine generators on each unit fosters energy independence and significantly lessens reliance on centralized power grids. This decentralized energy generation model not only contributes to the overall ecological responsibility of the development but also enhances the long-term viability of the community by mitigating its vulnerability to fluctuating energy costs and supply disruptions.

"House Re-Coding isn't just about building houses; it's about rebuilding lives. By embracing a rapid, sustainable, and mobile housing solution, we empower conflict-displaced communities to reclaim their future. We merge cutting-edge technology like 3D scanning and AI with a human-centered design philosophy, creating adaptable, resilient homes that foster self-sufficiency and community engagement. This is not simply shelter; it's a catalyst for hope, healing, and sustainable revitalization."

Bilal Baghdadi - Founder & CEO

House Recoding moves away from the tabula rasa approach often employed in post-disaster contexts. Instead, it utilizes advanced 3D scanning and AI technologies to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the remaining urban infrastructure. This data-driven approach enables the precise identification of structurally sound elements within damaged buildings, which then serve as anchors for the integration of the prefabricated housing units. This strategy not only reduces material waste and construction time but also preserves the historical memory embedded within the existing urban fabric, fostering a sense of continuity and place for returning residents.
