This project revolutionizes urban thermal comfort with a pioneering, zero-energy approach to outdoor cooling. The intervention seamlessly integrates subterranean and rooftop spaces within the plaza, meticulously employing biomimicry principles and sustainable design strategies. This regenerative system not only reduces ambient temperature but also harnesses renewable resources, minimizing its environmental impact. Tailored to the community's diverse needs, it facilitates social interaction, cultural engagement, and entertainment, fostering a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. The design's graceful curves act as a visual invitation, creating an alluring and dynamic urban space that compels exploration in the heart of the city.
The project incorporates the Malqaf, a traditional wind tower typology, to harness prevailing winds for natural ventilation. Furthermore, it leverages the principles observed in desert oases, where evaporative cooling and shade play a vital role in maintaining a comfortable microclimate. Advanced sensor technology continuously monitors temperature, humidity, and wind patterns, allowing for real-time optimization of the cooling mechanisms. This innovative system fosters a thermally comfortable environment within public spaces, seamlessly integrating traditional knowledge with cutting-edge technology.
Abu Dhabi is tackling urban heat with a clever and sustainable solution – biomimetic wind towers. These strategically placed towers are constructed with a steel frame, copper mesh filters, and innovative 3D-printed "cool bricks" with exceptional water absorption. As hot air passes through the mesh and cool bricks, it undergoes a natural evaporative cooling process, resulting in a refreshing microclimate within public plazas. This system prioritizes natural cooling power but seamlessly integrates a backup central cooling unit for optimal comfort. The project not only provides a comfortable outdoor environment but also sets a new standard for sustainable urban heat mitigation in architectural design.
Cool Abu Dhabi showcases a dedication to sustainable design from the ground up. The project utilizes eco-friendly Fluid Kerto-Q LVL, a high-performing wood product, for its structural core, minimizing its environmental footprint without compromising strength. Double Low-E glass panels seamlessly integrate into the design, offering both stunning visuals and energy efficiency by reducing heat gain and promoting natural thermal comfort within the plaza. Even the rooftop is designed with sustainability in mind. Pedestrians can enjoy unobstructed views and natural light thanks to the canopy structure, while a smart unit above parking areas tackles the urban heat island effect. This innovative system combines a copper mesh canopy with discreetly integrated solar cells under a tensile membrane. Not only does the copper mesh demonstrably reduce heat absorption, but the solar cells generate clean energy that powers the plaza and contributes to the surrounding areas. Through these meticulous design choices, Cool Abu Dhabi sets a new standard for sustainable architecture, promoting a cooler urban environment and a more energy-efficient future for Abu Dhabi.
